Health Services
There are specialist sexual health services (also known as GUM or Genito-Urinary Medicine) and HIV clinical nurse specialists in Newham. The Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) team is part of the Primary Care Trust working closely with community and acute services to offer comprehensive care and support for people in Newham living with HIV. The nurses are an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team in HIV treatment centres across Northeast London and have a strong role in discharge planning. The nurses work closely with district nurses, health visitors, school nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, social services and voluntary organisations. Nurses can also work together with GP's where appropriate and with clients' consent.
They provide support and advice around:
- Adherence to medication

- Physical disability associated with HIV
- Disclosure of diagnosis
- Pre-test discussions with parents/carers
- Follow-up care of babies born to HIV positive mothers

How can Adult Social Care help?
If you are living with HIV/AIDS, the Council may be able to support you. We will talk with you about your social, physical, medical, emotional and financial needs.
However, in order to work out just how much, and what type of, help is needed to make life easier for you, we do need to carry out an assessment.
What is an assessment?
After the assessment we will identify and agree your needs with you and discuss the help and support available to meet them, according to the seriousness of your situation. We recognise the importance of confidentiality, especially for people affected by HIV/AIDS. We will not share any information with people outside of Social Services without your consent, except in some exceptional circumstances. Exceptions would be when we have to provide information to help protect a vulnerable adult under the Mental Health Act, 1983 or child under the Children Act, 1989.
