There are over 24,000 carers in the London Borough of Newham, who help other people, usually relatives or friends, in their day-to-day lives.
The support these unpaid - or informal - carers provide includes helping people to:
- get dressed
- go to the toilet
- manage budgets
This support is invaluable, but it is not without cost.
Cost of caring
We know caring can:
- take its toll on carers’ emotional and physical health
- lead to social isolation
- result in higher utility bills
- increase transport costs
- increase shopping bills
- restrict some people’s ability to work
- have knock on-effects for families long-term finances
According to Carers UK, around half of carers say they struggle to make ends meet.
Newham Carers Discount Card
The London Borough of Newham and Newham Clinical Commissioning Group have considered how our whole community can do more to support and recognise the invaluable contributions of our unpaid carers.
In partnership with local businesses, we would like to introduce a Newham Carers Discount Card.
The card will only be available to carers who:
- are unpaid for their caring role
- have completed a carers assessment
- are registered with the Local Authority
The card will entitle cardholders to an agreed reduction in the cost of a service or good at participating businesses.
Participating businesses can decide the size and type of the discount (i.e. percentage or cash reduction).
Carers with the discount card will be offered the agreed discount on presentation of the card.
